Four Things You Need to Make a Killer Website

The beginning of a new year is often the best time to reevaluate the areas of strength and weakness for your business. Successful businesses spend this first month of the year assessing the areas that need to improve and put plans into place to address those areas. One key area many people like to address in the early months of the year is website development and updates. The value of a great website cannot be understated, and prioritizing this area of your business is sure to provide tangible results. If you’re looking for ways to improve your website, here are four things you can do to improve the quality of your site. 

  1. Position your “Contact Us” buttons in areas that make sense with the flow of your site

If your site does not have a “Contact Us” method, this really should be point number one, but for most businesses, this is a method already in place. Ensuring that those buttons are involved in the standard flow of your site is important. Going through a website should be a seamless experience. We recommend having permanent links on the header and footer of your site with an option to contact your business. 

  1. Your homepage is the window to your business, make it great!

The first impression is always the most important, so don’t be afraid to spend a little extra time ensuring that your homepage is the best page. The first thing to do before designing your homepage is to answer the question, “What am I trying to communicate about my business?” Some examples include:

  • Introducing your business, creating a narrative on why they should go with you
  • Educating your audience on the importance of your good or service
  • High-level overviews of what you offer. Give your audience just enough to pique their interest so they are inspired to dig deeper
  1. Your FAQ page should be a living document, update it frequently!

The “f” in FAQ stands for “frequently”, so as your business grows and receives feedback from customers and/or clients, update this area of your site with new questions that are asked. Treat this area of your site as the first line of customer support. If this area of your site becomes robust enough, you can save a good amount of time answering basic questions about your business. 

  1. Pop-ups; too much of a good thing can be bad

Pop-ups are a great way to communicate information you deem valuable enough to draw the full attention of the user. This is perfect for actions like promoting discounts, getting users to sign up for a newsletter, and announcing sales, but as many people are aware, too many popups can be an awful user experience. Limit your pop-ups to communicate only the most important information, and try not to use more than two in any given user session.
